Donnice Cochenour, Joan Lamborn and Helen Reed presented a well-organized and thoroughly researched update on electronic journal archiving. In this relatively new field of interest, they highlighted LOCKSS (Lots Of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) and Portico as the two major players, with widely differing models. Donnice reported on the recent effort of Colorado State University Libraries to mount and load a local LOCKSS box, which is currently serving as a "dark" archive of over 700 volumes. While Portico resides on a central server and only archives peer-reviewed journals, LOCKSS is more open to varying types of content (including open access content)and is hosted locally by each institution. LOCKSS preserves the look and feel of the original, while Portico converts all documents to a standard archival format. More lobbying of publishers is needed to ensure that all content which has been purchased by the Library can be digitally archived, instead of only a current year forward time frame as offered by LOCKSS. Several national programs, such as Pub Med Central and OhioLINK e-journal center, were highlighted as emerging alternatives.
